Striving for excellence and innovation for service and professionalism, the University of Baguio waves its flag proudly as one of the noble representatives from the Science High School Department, landing an esteemed finish at the 2026 National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) held in Ormoc City, Leyte.
Part of the lineup for young campus journalists, advisers, and education officials from across the country, the week-long event from April 13 to 17, 2026, featured the digital age’s integration into categories of news writing, editorial writing, feature writing, photojournalism, radio and TV broadcasting, online publishing, and other exciting highlights for delegates to dive into and enjoy.
As DepEd Assistant Secretary Carmela Oracion preceded the event with the opening remarks, she noted the importance of responsible journalism in the digital age and continuously encouraged student writers to uphold metrics and moral proceedings that are in line with truth, integrity, and critical thinking to combat the rapid spread of fake information and miscommunication on modern and digital platforms.
A Win For UB Science High and CAR: 2026 NSPC Photojournalism
As the competition showcased tenacity in different levels of engaging competitions and discussions, the University of Baguio Science High School’s Dwein Markeen Calaunan has risen to national prominence after being named the 5th Best Photojournalist of the Philippines. Facing all regions’ top campus photojournalists, Mr. Calaunan distinguished himself and brought fresh ideas and perspectives to the table through powerful visual storytelling, technical precision, and an eye for moments that speak beyond words.

Clinging to a well-deserved spot, he was recognized for efforts that placed him among the elite young journalists of the nation. Behind this milestone is the steadfast guidance of his coach and adviser from the university’s Science High department, Dr. Veronica M. Bito, a decorated journalism adviser whose mentorship has shaped Calaunan’s discipline and vision. As the reigning champion of both the Division Schools Press Conference and the Regional Schools Press Conference, he entered the national stage with momentum and proved his mettle against the best.
His work not only captured images but also conveyed truth, emotion, and meaning, which are hallmarks of impactful journalism. Having to compete and share credit amongst other student delegates, which culminated in a remarkable journey marked by excellence at every level. Showcasing conviction and liberalism in academic journalism (expressed through Sustainable Development Goals 4, 8, 10, 11, and 16), the dedication has brought pride to the University of Baguio (and the Science High Department) and pursuants within parts of the Cordillera Administrative Region. Mr. Calaunan’s achievement stands as a powerful reminder that with passion, perseverance, and purpose, young journalists can rise to national excellence and tell stories that matter.
