The University of Baguio would not be where it is today without the tireless guidance of its founders. Today, the UB Community celebrates the life and legacy of Nanay Rosa, the other half of the dynamic duo who has built the cornerstones that continue to support the university over seven decades after its founding.
Born in Tondo, Manila, Mrs. Rosa Bautista – affectionately known as Nanay — set her sights on being an exceptional educator and leader within her community. After earning her degree, she started her career as an elementary and high school teacher, serving several different schools in both Manila and Baguio. Following the conferment of her M.A. in Education at the University of the Philippines, she continued her professional journey as a high school principal and a supervisor. After establishing the Baguio Technical and Commercial Institute with her husband, Dr. Fernando Bautista, she then went on to serve as its supervisor, principal, secretary-treasurer, and member of the faculty.

This year’s celebration began with a heartfelt gathering at the Founders’ Garden. Led UB President, Dr. Javier Herminio Bautista, and with the members of the Bautista Family at the forefront, members of the UB community honored Nanay Rosa through brief Catholic rites offered in her memory.

Following this, the group then proceeded to the Victory Bell, where UB’s Baguio Bibak Ubbun Kaafuan (UBBUK) Cultural Group gave an opening presentation, followed by the ringing of the bell in celebration of the occasion.

After the opening ceremonies concluded, a solemn holy mass was held at the Cardinals Gym. The Bautista Family, alongside members of Top Management, faculty, non-teaching staff, as well as students, alumni, and retirees, were in attendance to pay their respects and to honor the late founder.
To conclude this year’s celebration, a special brunch was served at the Centennial Hall, allowing members of the family and the UB community to bond with each other over the pleasant memories and the enduring spirit of Nanay Rosa that continues to live on in the hearts of every UBian.

This year’s anniversary celebration was a vibrant celebration of the life and legacy of the university’s exceptional matriarch. It served as a touching tribute to her love and devotion for her family and the members of her community, a solemn reminder of her unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of generations of young learners from the past and into the future.
Here’s to 118 years of excellence and passion. Happy birthday, Nanay Rosa Castillo Bautista!
