The Human Resource Management Center, in collaboration with the Society of Working Scholars, successfully hosted the General Assembly of Student Assistants and Student Marshals on June 16, 2026, at the University of Baguio Cardinals Gym, promoting participation, collaboration, camaraderie, and organizational spirit. The general assembly was held to present key announcements, improve interpersonal skills, and enhance understanding of duties and responsibilities in order to continue delivering outstanding service to the university community. The event reminded everyone that being a working scholar is not easy, but it is also a meaningful journey filled with lessons, growth, and hope.

The University’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN, including SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, was also emphasized by the General Assembly. Through orientation, skill development, and advice on the duties and responsibilities of Student Assistants and Student Marshals, the event promoted lifelong learning and prepared students to be capable and responsible members of the university community. Additionally, by encouraging responsibility, integrity, discipline, and teamwork—all crucial elements for the development of open, inclusive, and productive organizations—the assembly reinforced institutional principles. The University of Baguio continues to develop student leaders who are ready to make important contributions to society and the school via programs like these.

The event started with 250 attendees, with an opening message given by the Human Resource Management Center Director, Ms. Mary Joy B. Limpin. The event host, Ms. Bianca A. Baculi, greeted everyone cordially and urged them to participate fully in the assembly. Her speech highlighted the value of cooperation, accountability, and the important roles student assistants and student marshals play in assisting the university in its day-to-day operations.

One of the highlights of the assembly was the inspirational talk given by Dr. Medardo F. Abarientos, University Registrar, who shared his personal journey as a former working scholar at the University of Baguio. His sincere sharing of emotionally charged and significant life events included his struggles, obstacles, and unresolved issues around juggling his work and school obligations. He was able to empathize with individuals in attendance who were going through similar experiences because of his open disclosure of a very challenging struggle. He talked about the difficulties he faced in balancing his academic obligations and work responsibilities. He stressed that perseverance and hard work were the keys to his success.

Dr. Abarientos recounted his humble beginnings and how he entered the university as a working scholar with little more than determination and a will to work hard. He said his industriousness opened opportunities for growth that allowed him to serve in different university offices, learn new skills outside his academic field, and eventually build a career within the institution. His story was a testament to how perseverance and a strong work ethic can turn adversity into opportunity.

The General Assembly also gave an important reminder about understanding and respect. Working scholars often face stress, pressure, and misunderstandings in school and at work. Dr. Abarientos said, “Kindness, patience, and support for one another is important. In difficult times, helping each other and showing respect can make the journey lighter.”

Following the message of inspiration, Mr. Kayzier Jan P. Baucas represented the organization of Society and Working Scholars. He emphasized the need for unity, cooperation, and active participation in the activities of the organization, reminding everyone that the Society is a platform for camaraderie, leadership, and mutual support. Mr. Baucas urged the participants to see every challenge as an opportunity for growth and to continue serving the University of Baguio with dedication, integrity, and pride.

Ms. Claris Palais talked about the roles and responsibilities of the working scholars. She also highlighted the importance of professionalism, accountability, and commitment in the performance of their assigned tasks, reminding the working scholars that they are representatives of the University of Baguio in their respective offices and work areas. Her presentation pointed out the need to balance academic duties with work responsibilities, encouraging the student assistants and student marshals to perform their duties with distinction, dedication, and a sense of purpose.

The General Assembly ended with a renewed sense of purpose, motivation, and unity among the Student Assistants and Student Marshals. Inspiring messages, informative discussions, and meaningful interactions during the event underscored the importance of service, responsibility, and teamwork in their capacities within the University community. Participants returned to their respective offices with valuable insights and a renewed commitment to living the ideals of the Society of Working Scholars: serving with integrity, excellence, and dedication while continuing to grow personally and professionally.
