Promoting literacy and cultural exchange through the university’s partnership with the Read Japan Project

Written by Pacita Sugando

March 10, 2026, a meaningful date for the University of Baguio community as it coincided with the birthday of Tatay Nanding, became even more memorable as the University of Baguio Library was selected as one of the fortunate recipients of 175 volumes of books from the Read Japan Project. The project is administered by the Tokyo Foundation and financed by The Nippon Foundation, organizations dedicated to promoting a deeper global understanding of Japan through literature and scholarly resources.

This remarkable achievement was made possible through the initiative of the Library Director, Mr. John Nigel C. Millare, who formally wrote to the foundation to request book donations that would help strengthen the culture of reading and academic enrichment within the University community.

The request was graciously granted, and the library received five boxes of books delivered through the Philippine Postal Corporation. The donated collection features a wide range of titles covering various subjects, including Japanese culture, society, economy, lifestyle, and government. These materials provide readers with valuable insights into Japan’s traditions, history, and contributions to global development.

Through this generous donation, members of the University community are given the opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop a deeper understanding of Japan and its role in the international landscape.

The University of Baguio Library extends its heartfelt gratitude to the organizations behind the Read Japan Project for their generosity and support. The library assures that these resources will be actively promoted and made accessible to students, faculty members, and researchers so that they may be maximized for learning, research, and cultural appreciation.
