UB March flag ceremony celebrates achievements in athletics and community service

As February turned over into March, it came time once again for the University of Baguio to hold its monthly flag ceremony. This event, which is held during the first Monday of every month, is not only a gathering to encourage unity and patriotism but also a venue to recognize the exceptional performance of the members of the UB community. 

At the March flag ceremony, the School of Criminal Justice and Public Safety (SCJPS) was commended for the exceptional performance of their students at the 2nd Professional Criminologists Association of the Philippines – Cordillera Karate Friendship Cup Tournament.

Under the Novice Male event, Cody Alilis secured a silver medal in the Individual category, while Christopher Manipon, Denmark Velasco, and Raffy Chagsan took home bronze under the Group category. In the Intermediate Male event, James Oranza secured a silver medal in the Individual category, and Benson Ogas, Jhonray Codli, and Richard Bagryantsev finished as silver medalists in the Group category.

In the Novice Female event, Amarra Kaye Sebaten, Kathleen Igualdo, and Jinky Agtulao secured a gold medal in the Group category. In the Intermediate Female Group Category, Jhelean Cosil, Janea Falli-It, and Francine Velasco also finished with a gold medal, while Ayesha Alilis won a silver medal in the Intermediate Female Individual Category.

Also from the SCJPS, student intern Jhoper Jake Tomilas, alongside student marshalls Dalemharc Salingbay and Romano Anno from the Security Office were commended for apprehending theft suspect Kenneth Dalupan on February 10, 2025 at the Kubo food stall. Mr. Dalupan had a standing warrant at the Baguio City Police Office Station 7.

Moving back into sports, the university’s athletes were also commended for their excellent performance at the recent Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) Meet 2025, netting win after win in their respective events and showcasing their incredible hard work and dedication to their sport.

In the Swimming Event, Sephanaia Ielle Tagara secured five gold medals and two silver medals across seven different categories, while Jazpearl Khate Sacquiaten won one gold medal and two silver medals in three separate categories. Athena Masadao won two gold medals, one silver medal, and two bronze medals, while Jovie Yzelle Calisog secured two gold medals, Rolando Ponseca Jr. earned two gold medals, one silver medal, and two bronze medals, and Johann Dominic Jimenez won a gold medal across the different categories in the swimming event.

For the Swimming – High School events, John Kahlel Caruncho started the team off strong with seven gold medals across seven different categories. Rashad Ocatenn followed with four gold medals and two silver medals, while Ezekiel Rylekyle Tambiac also secured one gold, two silver, and one bronze in his events. Edric Charles Mercado also managed to nab one gold and two silver medals, Eirichson Ladislao two gold and one silver medals.

Jan Eowyn Caruncho managed to secure an impressive seven gold medals, while Maia Ysabelle Cesista racked up six gold medals and one silver medal, and Destiny Dame Eslay finished with three gold medals and four silver medals. Kryshia Angelle Sinlao also ended her events with four gold medals, while Justine Grace Bañaga secured one gold and three silver medals, and Riyana Injy Ayban finished with a gold medal in their respective categories.

In the Muaythai event, Caeleb Wade Brown secured a silver medail in the Elementary Waikru and Mae Muay category. Stephen Gabriel Tambalo also secured a silver medal in the Elementary Mae Muay category. For the High School events, Edel Ali Ngina and Clark Fattit finished with gold medals in Mae Muay, while Ysrielle Banagued also earned a gold in the Waikru category and Charyl Wayne Bannagao also emerged with a gold medal in the Pencak Silat category.

In the Badminton Elementary event, Marga Estelle Aguirre and Renee Scarlette Somentac participated in the Girls Doubles category. For the High School events, Marianne Isabelle Orallo, Keith Jefferson Rivera, and Nestor Garcia Jr. all secured a gold medal in their respective categories.

Following these are the Taekwondo events, which saw several winners in the elementary category. Winter Niamh Scarlet Abuan secured two gold medals, and Jamella Jareau Crane Mabanglo also secured two gold medals in the Poomsae and Team Poomsae events. Kyla Nicole Takinan earned a gold medal in the Sparring – Girls Division, while Chris Levi Culalad also won a gold medal in the Sparring – Boys Division. Cyron Chad Chumawin, Jacob Antonn Erece, and Joshua Aaron Erece also received gold medals in the same category.

In the High School events, Cye Guiller Evangelista secured four gold medals, while Matt Rejhan Lavestre won two gold medals in his different events. On the other hand, Chris Levi Culallad, Cyron Chard Chumawin, Jacob Antonn Erece, Joshua Aaron Erece, Ryan Clifton Nabeget Jr., Aithan Raphael Ogoy, Jonas Sales, and Jun Adrian Wagtingan secured one gold medal each across their different categories in the Boys Division.

For the Girls Division, Chezka Nicolette Luzadas secured two gold medals, while Rihannah Kate Caguioa, Ashley Diaz, Angel Lyn Yvainne Dacanay, Zyra Allyson Lee, Joniya Yua Ysabell Obiacoro, and Thalia Ken Takinan secured one gold medal each in their different categories. Rina Venice Maltizo also finished with a silver medal in her category.

For the Boxing event, Derek Fanak-Il finished as a gold medalist for the High School 51 KG category. In the Lawn Tennis High School event, Angela Melendres and Christian James Bunag secured a silver and bronze medal, respectively. In the Basketball High School event, Matthew Greg Rimando finished as the 1st Runner Up.

In the Arnis High School event, Princess Ysabelle Jorvina continued to lead the charge with four gold medals and one bronze medal, with Albeimer Jonas Sadey, Caira Mizrek Bunoy, and Rhiana Louise Pascua following closely behind with three gold medals each. Chloe Villanueva also secured three gold medals and one silver medal, while Zharen Yumi Jael Nota secured one gold medal, and Richard Jr. Nabus secured one gold and one bronze medal in their categories.

Rounding out the sports awardees are the Volleyall High School, Table Tennis High School, and Chess High School athletes. Leann Bacwaden emerged as Champion for the Volleyball High School Girls Division and Symon Suyat was named Champion for the Boys Division. Shaquille Balacdao was also proclaimed as the Champion and CARAA Second Secondary Volleyball MVP.

In the Table Tennis event, Roshan Joah Catbagan and Guia Vhonne Zate secured gold medals in the Singles Boys and Girls divisions, respectively, while Leigh Angeli Colyong finished with a silver in the Singles Girls Division. Justine Jonathan Jover III and Richard Nixon Rivera won a gold medal in the Boys Doubles Division.

Finally, for the Chess – High School event, Xyrus Gil Arinos managed to net two individual silver medals, one team gold medal, and one team silver medal, and Mary Grace Valdez also secured one team silver medal and one bronze medal.

The individuals recognized at this month’s flag ceremony are a testament to the excellence that the University of Baguio strives to achieve. Whether it’s in athletics or in academics or everyday life, these extraordinary individuals continue to be an inspiration to the community for their drive and determination and their will to succeed.
