The University of Baguio would not be where it is today without its founders’ unyielding efforts and dedication to nurturing an institution that can support the academic pursuits of students from all walks of life. Today, the UB community honors the life of the university’s matriarch, Nanay Rosa, celebrating her enduring legacy and the role she played in shaping the future of the university.
Hailing from Tondo, Manila, Mrs. Rosa C. Bautista – affectionately known as Nanay – worked hard to become an exceptional educational leader. She started her career as an elementary and high school teacher, serving different schools both in Manila and Baguio. Afterward, she then worked as a high school principal and a supervisor after earning her M.A. in Education at the University of the Philippines. Once Baguio Tech was established, she worked as its supervisor, principal, secretary-treasurer, and member of the faculty.
This year marks the 38th Death Anniversary of UB’s beloved Nanay. The university commemorated this occasion by holding a eucharistic mass at the UB Chapel, where family, friends, and members of the faculty and staff paid their respects. It was a solemn gathering that allowed the members of the UB Community to remember her life and legacy, honoring decades of tireless service and enduring support.
Following the mass, the family was ushered towards the Founder’s Garden, where they offered flowers, prayers, and candles at the memorial site for Nanay Rosa and Tatay Fernando. Once all of the ceremonial parts of the program were completed, the guests filed into the Centennial Hall to have a pleasant lunch.
Nanay Rosa’s legacy continues to live on in the hearts of the UB community, reflected in the university’s commitment to excellence and service. Her dedication to education and unwavering support for students remain an inspiration for generations to come.
