Written by Mary Joy B. Limpin (CGSP, MAHE), HRMC

On May 30, 2025, the Human Resource Management Center (HRMC) hosted a deeply impactful one-day seminar titled “Navigating Difficult Behaviors: Mental Health and Workplace Response.” The training aimed to strengthen HR professionals’ ability to support colleagues facing mental health and behavioral challenges in the workplace.

The session featured Dr. Ava Angeli Bustillo, RCG, CMHF, a respected counseling professor and practicing counselor whose insight and empathy helped bring clarity to complex topics. Her message was clear: behind every behavior is a person, and every policy should be guided by compassion.

Throughout the training, participants learned how to recognize early signs of mental health issues, approach sensitive conversations with care, and distinguish between performance challenges and deeper behavioral concerns. De-escalation techniques and crisis management protocols were also introduced, equipping HR staff with tools to respond effectively in emotionally charged situations.

A strong emphasis was placed on psychological safety, respectful communication, and the importance of legally sound but humane documentation practices. The workshop also encouraged building a workplace culture that prioritizes well-being and empathy.

This seminar served as a vital step in fostering a more supportive and mentally healthy work environment where employees feel seen, heard, and valued.
