A cohort of nursing students from the University of Baguio‘s School of Nursing (SON) successfully concluded a comprehensive three-month (3) international student exchange program at Jining Polytechnic University (JPU) in Shandong, China. Providing an international opportunity that bridges advanced academic instruction with immersive cultural integration.
The exchange program and cultural immersion gave students hands-on experience diving into best practices and techniques through specialized coursework aligned with international standards in healthcare education and information systems, along with dynamic lectures and practical sessions alongside local faculty and peers.
The program included extensive clinical exposures in addition to traditional coursework, offering a unique perspective on healthcare systems overseas. The student delegates gained invaluable practical insights, from studying cutting-edge medical technologies and orthopedic interventions at the Affiliated Hospital of Jining Medical University to witnessing oncology nursing routines, complex medication administration, and the use of advanced ultrasound vein finders at Jining Cancer Hospital.

Small-group discussions with local faculty and staff nurses further enriched these placements, fostering a rich exchange of comparative healthcare practices aimed at enhancing patient-centered care.
The exchange also placed a strong emphasis on comprehensive cultural immersion in China. The students participated in traditional workshops that sharpened verbal and non-verbal cues in social and recreational activities. A few to mention were Tai Chi practice, lantern-making, crafting fengzhe (traditional Chinese kites), and sharpening their mastery of Chinese vocabulary, Pinyin, and character writing. SON student delegate and cohort member Ajel Elaine Co brought pride to the delegation by securing first place in the local Chinese Character Writing Competition.

Other activities included collaborative academic projects with an international community of peers from Mongolia, Indonesia, China, Kazakhstan, Guinea, and the Seychelles, fostering deep cross-cultural collaboration and community-building on campus. The itinerary further highlighted educational excursions to prominent historical sites, giving members of the cohort firsthand exposure to the cultural heritage of their host country through visits to major national landmarks such as the Great Wall and the Summer Palace.
Overall, the program showcased its success in fostering fun learning and growth through preparations for the students (from arrival, stay, and departure). Grounded in shared partnerships and a commitment to global development (expressed through SDGs 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, and 17), the exchange equipped the participants with enhanced adaptability, expanded global perspectives, and practical professional insights directly applicable to their future careers as compassionate, globally minded nurses ready to serve within an interconnected world.
