The University of Baguio (UB) has been selected as a Professional Development grant winner in the PEAC-REX Support for Transformational Educators for Empowerment and Reform (STEER) Program Cycle 1. This prestigious program is a partnership between the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) and Rex Education’s EDUKAMPYON initiative. Certification of Grant Award was received by Dr. Marivic Muton, UB’s High School Principal as the university’s representative, given at the auditorium of Rex Knowledge Center, Quezon City last June 17, 2024.

The PEAC-REX STEER program is designed to empower private schools like the University of Baguio to revolutionize their approach to teacher professional development for learners, citizens, and the country (para sa bata, sa mamamayan, at sa bayan).  With a focus on innovation and effectiveness, STEER targets three key areas that are essential for modern education. Firstly, it encourages the innovative use of technology to create personalized and flexible learning experiences, tailoring education to the individual needs of each student. Secondly, STEER promotes innovative pedagogy, exploring new teaching methods and strategies that enhance student engagement and provide more accurate assessments of learning outcomes. Lastly, the program emphasizes the importance of fostering resilience and well-being in both learners and teachers, recognizing that a supportive and healthy environment is crucial for achieving whole school outcomes.

Developed by Lea Papay and Dr. Marivic Mutong, the “InfoMedia Mastery Program”, based on their research is a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing information literacy skills among Grade 12 students which will eventually include Grade 11 and Junior High school at the University of Baguio. Addressing the need for stronger information literacy instruction and technological skills development, the program utilizes a multi-phase approach, including needs assessment, curriculum integration, and hands-on workshops. By incorporating the Test of Information Literacy for All Subjects (TRAILS), the program aims to equip students with the critical skills needed for academic success and future endeavors.

As part of the program, UB will receive mentoring from an EDUKAMPYON Innovation Master, a leading expert in teacher professional development. The Innovation Master will provide guidance in refining UB’s proposed professional development program and crafting a detailed implementation plan. This plan will be annexed to a Tripartite Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between PEAC, Rex Education, and UB, outlining the terms and conditions of the program.

The grant releases in tranches for the program will be contingent upon the validation of the assigned EDUKAMPYON Innovation Master, ensuring that the funds are utilized effectively to achieve the program’s goals.

The selection of the University of Baguio for the PEAC-REX STEER program is a testament to the university’s commitment to providing high-quality education and fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. The UB community eagerly anticipates the positive impact this program will have on its faculty, learners, and the wider educational landscape.
