The Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, the Philippines’ most prestigious literary recognition, celebrated its 72nd year with a dazzling awards night at the Philippine International Convention Center on November 22, 2024.

Among the shining stars of the evening was Dr. Stacy Haynie B. Ayson, a distinguished faculty member from the University of Baguio, who clinched the Second Prize in the “Poetry Written for Children” category.

Dr. Ayson, who teaches in the BA English program under the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts at UB, earned the award for her suite of poems titled “Where Are the Dinosaurs?”. This heartfelt creation was inspired by her teenage son and his childhood fascination with dinosaurs and Philippine mountain peaks, a connection beautifully explored through a child’s imaginative lens. The entry captivated the judges with its unique blend of natural imagery, cultural roots, and emotional depth, resonating deeply with the curiosity and wonder of young readers.

Award-Winning Moment
“Dr. Stacy Haynie B. Ayson proudly holding her Palanca Second Prize trophy, a testament to her poetic brilliance and dedication to the literary arts.”

This recognition builds on Dr. Ayson’s growing legacy in the literary community. Last year, she participated in the Gawad Bienvenido Lumbera of the National Committee on Literary Arts, where she submitted a series of Kankanaey poems. These works were a tribute to her grandmothers and great-grandmother, the storytellers of her childhood, and also served as a heartfelt apology to her Kankanaey ancestors for her inability to pass on their language to her children. Her powerful tribute clearly displays her dedication to preserving and honoring her cultural heritage.

Seated alongside literary luminaries such as Peter Solis Nery (Third Prize winner) and Edgar C. Samar (First Prize winner), Dr. Ayson expressed profound gratitude for the recognition. “This is not just a personal milestone but a testament to the importance of creativity in education and storytelling,” she shared. “I hope it motivates my students and colleagues to pursue writing and share their experiences with the world.

Her poetry serves as a bridge between generations, paying tribute to her son while praying for him to maintain his happy and inquisitive spirit. The suite also honors Dr. Ayson’s Kankanaey heritage, reflecting the storytelling traditions passed down by her grandmothers and great-grandmother that shaped her own childhood.

Dr. Ayson noted that her participation in the Palanca Awards was driven by a desire to inspire others: “Winning this award is a chance to honor our heritage and encourage others to write, capturing life’s moments for future generations.” Her recognition continues a tradition of excellence and creativity in the literary arts at UB.

UB Pride at the Palanca
“Representing the University of Baguio, Dr. Ayson celebrates her achievement alongside fellow winners Edgar C. Samar (First Prize) and Peter Solis Nery (Third Prize).”

The University of Baguio proudly celebrates Dr. Ayson’s remarkable achievement, recognizing her not only as an exceptional educator but also as a writer who brings honor to the institution. This victory underscores UB’s commitment to fostering creativity, cultural appreciation, and academic excellence, inspiring students and colleagues alike.

A Celebration of Filipino Talent
“The prestigious 72nd Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature honors the best in Filipino writing, with Dr. Ayson shining as UB’s representative.”

This year’s Palanca Awards was a showcase in Cordilleran excellence, as alongside Dr. Ayson, the winner of the Essay category also hailed from the region. Their performance in this year’s event exemplifies the creativity and free spirit of Cordilleran culture, and how it continues to prevail into the modern age.
