On October 11, 2025, the University of Baguio conducted an empowering orientation for newly hired Student Assistants and Marshals at the Legacy Multipurpose Hall. This event marked a milestone, as it included the participation of the parents or guardians of each working scholar for the first time. The primary goal of the orientation was towards the development of the skills of Student Assistants and Marshals, fostering their growth in creative and critical thinking while reinforcing proper office etiquette and professional conduct.
At the heart of this initiative was the University’s commitment to holistic development. The program provided a comprehensive overview of UB’s policies and guidelines, clarifying the roles and responsibilities of working scholars. It also served to educate parents and guardians on the expectations placed upon their wards, emphasizing the importance of commitment to the scholarship program and the potential consequences should a scholar discontinue their participation. The Human Resource Management Center (HRMC) sought to strengthen the scholars’ dedication to both academic excellence and professional conduct, ensuring that they contribute to the university community with ethical responsibility.
In line with the University’s vision of fostering leadership, the event gathered 268 participants (134 working scholars and 134 parents/guardians). The collaborative efforts of the HRMC, Society of Working Scholars (SWS) Officers, the Security Office, and the Student Accounts Office ensured the successful execution of this event, which aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4, Quality Education, 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth, 10, Reduced Inequalities, and 16, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. The program focused on providing relevant skills and preparation for future employment opportunities, particularly by enhancing the leadership potential of each student through hands-on experience.
Leadership Development and Gender Equality at UB
This orientation was not just about fulfilling a work requirement it was about leadership development. The program emphasized the importance of taking initiative, as shared by Mr. Jared Aquino, a former Student Marshal now serving in the Security Department. He inspired the scholars by stressing that their duties should be driven by genuine commitment, rather than mere compliance.
Ms. Ansherina Osit, a former Student Assistant now in charge of financial scholarships at the Student Accounts Office, shared her insights on the significance of scholarship benefits. She highlighted how these benefits, particularly tuition discounts to help alleviate financial burdens while also providing valuable work experience. Her mentorship underscored the importance of being a working scholar, not only as a financial support system but also as a stepping stone towards leadership and future career success.
Empowering Through Development and Personal Growth
The event’s discussions also focused on personal growth as a core aspect of leadership. Ms. Mary Joy Bulatao-Limpin, Director of HRMC, talked about the significance of personality development. She stressed that being a competent working scholar goes beyond academic and professional achievement. It also involves serving the university community with humility, hard work, and kindness. She encouraged the scholars to embrace leadership roles by cultivating a positive self-image, good grooming, and adherence to a proper dress code. These attributes are essential in preparing for future success, both in academic settings and professional environments.
The parents and guardians were also welcomed to the program, and Ms. Bulatao-Limpin urged them to support their children in this journey. She emphasized that the development of leadership skills through the Student Development Program requires a collaborative effort between scholars, their families, and the university community, reflecting the values of SDG 17, Partnership for the Goals.

UB’s Strengthening Commitment Through Policy and Collaboration
The final segment of the orientation focused on the operational guidelines for Student Assistants and Marshals. Ms. Judy-an Q. Im-motna, Student Assistant Coordinator and a former Student Assistant herself, presented the Policy Operations Manual. This manual outlines the duties and responsibilities of the scholars, as well as the benefits and legal aspects of their work. Ms. Im-motna also provided clarity to parents and guardians about the expectations tied to the scholarship program.
The session concluded with active engagement from both scholars and their families, as all questions were addressed. The orientation not only set the stage for successful careers and academic journeys but also laid the foundation for a supportive and collaborative academic community at UB. This initiative serves as an example of how UB continues to prioritize development and leadership in every aspect of student life.
In conclusion, the University of Baguio’s orientation program for Student Assistants and Marshals was a comprehensive effort to develop both the professional and personal growth of its students. By emphasizing leadership, academic integrity, and collaboration with families, UB reaffirms its commitment to empowering students to become future leaders in their respective fields, while making meaningful contributions to society.
