Excelling in the field of medical laboratory sciences, esteemed academic students and members from the University of Baguio’s School of Medical Laboratory Science (BSMLS) took part in a month-long quest of academic learning and cultural immersion alongside the neighboring institution of Huachiew Chalermprakiet University, Samut Prakan, Thailand.
From January 7 to February 7, 2026, the visit notes the presence of thirty-nine (39) BS Medical Laboratory Science students alongside two (2) clinical instructors from the institution that partake in discussions to enhance knowledge competencies and multicultural appreciation through a mixture of leisure and academics.
Anchored and implemented through the academic mobility program, the cross-cultural visit provided notable insights and recommendations to further enhance student performances and interactive case presentations through comprehensive examinations and hands-on training (through direct supervision), academic growth, and professional advancement.
Global Clinical Immersion for Future Practitioners
Notable activities included manipulation of selected state-of-the-art clinical laboratory equipment, allowing the students to observe and initiate high-technology diagnostic tests and procedures while performing non-routine clinical laboratory procedures (including parasitology, hematology, serology, transfusion practices and blood bank procedures, clinical microscopy, and advanced microbiology techniques).
Apart from the advancements in clinical procedures and key variables needed in the field of laboratory sciences, the outbound representatives from the university also took time to indulge in the vast and vibrant culture that Thailand had to offer. Including an off-campus educational tour that encouraged the visit to Thailand’s Forensic Institute, which houses the primary government agency for forensic analysis under the Ministry of Justice. Allowing students to view closely the technical procedures that take place during an actual autopsy.

The tour also included a visit to the Red Cross Center Facility in Thailand, allowing a direct view of areas that are vital to blood bank procedures and processing units, as well as the Bang Phi hospital in Samut Prakan, where the first-hand experience of the hospital and clinical laboratory set-up and operations commenced. The off-campus visits provided the BSMLS representatives with a reinforced direction on classroom learning blended with real-world contexts and necessary steps that are indicative of their training.

Wellness and Explorative Journey to Thailand
The tour also included a wellness exploration, giving the students and administrators a chance to unwind and enjoy the festivities and curiosities that Thailand has to offer. Indulging in visual eye candy and vast natural spaces found at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, and various local markets that offer students the opportunity to gain notable cross-cultural exposure to implement within their personal and professional ventures down the line.
The initiatives from the intercultural exchange were identified and directly observed through the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
- 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) – supporting the cause of future medical practitioners that serve the public with above standard procedures, care, and techniques to increase the quality of livelihood and medical advancements for better patient care, paired with research techniques
- 4 (Quality Education) – supplied in the form of laboratory exposure and academic training in the fields of interactive lectures, laboratory studies, cadaveric studies and analysis, parasitology, hematology, serology, blood banking, clinical microscopy, microbiology, forensics, and autopsies.
- 8 (Economic Growth) – creating and expanding the field of opportunities for tenure and career growth under the medical laboratory science field through trainings, cross-cultural exposures, and clinical immersions to create a unified theory and practice to help bridge the gap between Philippine and global medical advancements
- 10 (Reduced Inequality) – increasing the field and scope of studies that give more opportunities to esteemed medical laboratory science students and soon-to-be professionals through immersion, observation studies, and cross-cultural exchanges with partnered institutions and offices
- 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) – developing a strong bond between the collaboration with neighboring educational institutions and relevant medical associations within Asia

Part of the academic journey required the students to present a case analysis (through a journal club where they are grouped into three teams and are assigned to various case studies that integrate clinical and laboratory data), assessing how well the students correlate the concepts they learned through interactive peer and mentor engagements, which then are presented to a panel of mentors at HCU, Thailand.
The final stretch of the assessment included a 100-point multiple choice exam as the final assessment, which then culminated and finished with a graduation ceremony led by Dean Sucha Chulsomlee, handing certificates awarded to all outbound participants from the University of Baguio.

Concluding the month-long immersion and cross-cultural exchange and academic initiatives supplied by HCU and UB, the program provided notable enhancements and exposures for esteemed students and future practitioners under the BSMLS department to strengthen their readiness for global practice. Contributing to valuable metrics and knowledge building towards the university’s dedication to generating graduates who are globally competitive while supporting the more general objectives of academic excellence and international cooperation in a variety of clinical and cultural situations.
