On September 7, 2024, the Office of Student Affairs hosted an engaging orientation for newly appointed student leaders, aimed at equipping them with the essential skills and knowledge to navigate their roles effectively. This event not only focused on leadership responsibilities but also emphasized the importance of sustainability within the university community.
The orientation served as a platform for student leaders to understand their responsibilities in fostering a collaborative environment that upholds the university’s values. By empowering these leaders with comprehensive guidance, the Office of Student Affairs aims to cultivate a generation of students who are not only effective in governance but also passionate advocates for sustainable practices.
One of the key initiatives introduced during the orientation was the distribution of reusable tumblers to each student leader. This thoughtful gesture was designed to promote two crucial Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 12—Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 6—Clean Water and Sanitation.
Promoting SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
By encouraging the use of reusable tumblers, the student leaders are taking a tangible step towards responsible consumption. Single-use plastics contribute significantly to environmental degradation, and by making the switch to reusable options, they help reduce plastic waste. This small but impactful change is a vital part of fostering a culture of sustainability on campus, encouraging peers to adopt similar practices.
Supporting SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
The initiative also aligns with SDG 6, which focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. By reducing reliance on single-use plastics, we help protect our water sources from pollution, ensuring cleaner environments and healthier communities. Tumblers promote the practice of carrying water on the go, encouraging the use of safe and clean water from the university’s clean water station for refills. It serves as a reminder of the importance of clean water access and the responsibility we all share in preserving it.
As student leaders, these individuals are in a unique position to influence their peers.
