On April 15, 2024, a significant step towards community empowerment and sustainable development was taken as the University of Baguio (UB), through its Research Innovation Extension and Community Outreach (RIECO) office, spearheaded a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing at Barangay Pucsusan, Baguio City. The RIECO office initiated this collaborative endeavor aimed at fostering positive change within the local community.

The signing ceremony was attended by the collaborating parties. Honorable Karl Gabaen, the Barangay Captain of Pucsusan, and Kagawad Melchora M. Pekas, signed the MOA on behalf of the barangay, symbolizing their commitment to the partnership. Additionally, Ms. Ana P. Codley, Social Worker Officer at the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), joined as the third-party signatory, further solidifying the collaborative effort.

This partnership, set to span three years, holds immense promise for the community of Barangay Pucsusan. The cornerstone of the agreement revolves around UB’s commitment to conduct a comprehensive Needs Assessment within the community. This assessment will serve as the foundation for designing and implementing designed programs addressing the specific needs identified. By aligning activities with the identified needs, UB aims to ensure maximum impact and sustainability.

The MOA encompasses various dimensions of community development, aligning closely with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined by the United Nations. These SDGs provide a universal framework for addressing pressing global challenges, including poverty, inequality, education, health, and environmental sustainability.

Through the partnership, UB will address key pillars of sustainable development, integrating them into its programs and activities, which directly contribute to the following SDGs:

SDG 4: Quality Education: UB will work towards enhancing literacy rates within Barangay Pucsusan by implementing activities and programs that promote access to quality education and adult literacy programs.

SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth: Empowering community members with sustainable livelihood opportunities will be a focal point. UB will collaborate with local stakeholders to identify viable economic activities and provide training and support to enhance income-generating capabilities.

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being: Improving health outcomes is paramount to sustainable development. UB will spearhead activities aimed at promoting health awareness, providing access to healthcare services, and addressing prevalent health issues within the community.

SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities: Enhancing resilience to natural disasters and other hazards is essential for community well-being. UB will work with local authorities and residents to develop and implement risk management strategies, including disaster preparedness and response plans.

SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions: Building peaceful and inclusive societies is fundamental for sustainable development. UB will support programs promoting conflict resolution, community cohesion, and the rule of law within Barangay Pucsusan.

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure: Access to basic infrastructure is vital for improving living standards and fostering economic growth. UB will collaborate with local government agencies and community members to identify and address infrastructure gaps, such as water supply, sanitation, and transportation.

By addressing these pillars with specific SDGs, UB’s partnership with Barangay Pucsusan aims to contribute significantly to the community’s overall well-being and advance progress towards sustainable development.

As the partnership unfolds, it holds the potential to serve as a model for effective community engagement and sustainable development practices. Through ongoing collaboration and commitment, UB and Barangay Pucsusan strive to create a brighter, more inclusive future for all residents, leaving a lasting legacy of positive change and progress.
