UB Vigors Cultural Diversity With Project D.I.G. (Diversity Ideologies in Globalization)

Project D.I.G. (Diversity Ideologies in Globalization) is one of the key initiatives of the University of Baguio’s Office of Student Affairs, carried out in partnership with the Center for Counseling and Student Development and the Linkages Office. The program was created to appreciate, empower, and highlight the unique cultural identities of our international students. Guided by UB’s belief that diversity sparks creativity, shared learning, and deeper global understanding, Project D.I.G. offers a meaningful space where students from different countries can connect, learn from one another, and celebrate who they are.

The learning environment fosters an atmosphere where respect, inclusivity, and cultural awareness organically develop via engaging dialogues, cultural sharing, and community-building exercises. Additionally, it reinforces our kids’ sense of global citizenship and serves as a reminder that accepting diversity fosters a more caring and interconnected society.

The celebration began with an energetic cultural performance by the Performing Arts Group, setting an inspiring tone for the entire event. This was followed by welcome remarks from Dr. Janice Kaylyn A. Lonogan, who emphasized UB’s commitment to supporting students in their intercultural and holistic development. One of the key moments of the program was the message delivered by Baguio City Tourism Officer, Engr. Alec Mapalo. He shared a heartfelt reminder of how diversity can transform individuals and communities. His talk revolved around three meaningful lessons:

Honor Your Cultural Identity

Engr. Mapalo encouraged students to take pride in where they come from, reminding them that their cultural background is a source of strength and confidence.

Be Curious About Others

He invited students to broaden their understanding of the world by learning about cultures beyond their own—an important step toward mutual respect and appreciation.

Build Bridges, Not Barriers

He highlighted that thriving communities are built when people choose connection over division. Creativity and innovation flourish when individuals from different cultures work together.

Project D.I.G. turns diversity into a catalyst for creativity, teamwork, and significant international engagement rather than just a celebration of it. The event today goes beyond cultural presentations, as Ms. Melanie R. Saro emphasized in her closing remarks. It emphasizes creating a learning atmosphere that promotes inclusivity and global understanding, respecting each student’s individual identity, and establishing real connections.

The event this year demonstrated the importance of cultural interchange in creating learners with a global perspective. Project D.I.G. improves our understanding of the various cultures in our society by providing a forum for students to discuss their customs, narratives, and points of view. It also inspires everyone to interact with the world more responsibly and freely.

As one of the universities recognized in the WURI rankings, UB continues to integrate innovation into both academic and student-life programs. Project D.I.G. reflects this commitment through the following WURI pillars:

  • WURI 1: Industrial Application
Students gain real intercultural experience that supports fields like tourism, hospitality, diplomacy, and international relations

  • WURI 2: Value-Creating Education
The program strengthens key skills such as empathy, leadership, and intercultural intelligence—qualities essential in today’s workplaces

  • WURI 3: Social Responsibility & Ethics
By promoting inclusivity and peace-building, the program helps develop socially responsible and ethical future leaders

  • WURI 4: Student Mobility & Openness
The event reinforces UB’s culture of global collaboration by giving space to multicultural voices and perspectives

  • WURI 5: Crisis Management
Project D.I.G. helps students build resilience as they navigate cultural adjustments and personal transitions

  • WURI 6: Progress in the Fourth Industrial Revolution
Through diverse cultural exchanges, students sharpen soft skills such as communication, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving—competencies that matter in an increasingly digital world

Project D.I.G. reflects the University of Baguio’s dedication to nurturing globally minded, culturally aware, and innovative students. By creating a space where identities are celebrated and connections are strengthened, the program affirms UB’s commitment as a WURI-ranked institution that prepares compassionate and culturally intelligent leaders.

Engr. Mapalo also praised UB for fostering an inclusive environment where students from around the world feel welcome and supported. He encouraged international students to carry with them the values of cultural pride, confidence, and openness that they’ve developed at UB. Project D.I.G. advances several United Nations SDGs, including goals 4 (Quality Education), 10 (Reduced Inequalities), 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). These reflect UB’s ongoing commitment to creating an equitable and globally engaged learning environment.

As the Project D.I.G. concludes, it leaves us inspired to turn diversity into opportunity, creativity, and meaningful action. By embracing different perspectives, UB continues to cultivate leaders who are not only culturally aware but also ready to make an impact in a connected world.
