A digital seminar with clear purpose and intent for article writing

The University of Baguio, led by the Linkages Office – Marketing and Promotions together with the Research Innovation and Extension Community Outreach (RIECO) conducted a seminar dedicated to enhancing writing, alignment, and timely aesthetical approaches for website publications.

Held at the SMART AVR on July 29, members and representatives from the faculty and non-teaching staff gathered for the four-part talk on defining clear objectives to inform viewers on relevant information and happenings to and for the University. The seminar garnered a total of 93 participants (12 participants on-site, 81 participants via zoom conference).

The session was opened by the partaking message from the Linkages director, Ms. Melanie Rulla-Saro. Accompanying her was Ms. Janica Mae Palkit as Master of Ceremonies.

Deemed by the Linkages director, the goal of the seminar was to express the need for writing and publishing articles with an impactful purpose. Further nurturing the skills and ideas of various faculty and non-teaching staff to continue to innovate and broaden the societal and technological viewpoints, for information retention and knowledge build-up.

Credible and accessible knowledge / information

The first half of the seminar was given by RIECO Director Dr. Donnavila Marie Panday on Aligning Writing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Linkages Office Publicist Ms. Thea Sherina Rillera, focusing on basic writing guidelines and navigating WordPress publishing.

Both talks covered advancements and important footnotes in crafting timely and relevant articles and publications. Encouraging the participants to focus on the University’s objectives and goals toward the 17 SDGs presented. By understanding effective techniques that display how the SDGs are put into action through interconnectedness and inclusivity, exemplary collaboration, and a global call for action that builds a sustainable and equitable world.

Proper use and handling of intellectual properties and digital assets

As the other half of the talk was given clarity by the Marketing and Promotions associates, the correct use of images for aesthetic value was handled by Ms. Jazeline Mostoles. While giving a refresher on proper citations and crediting for digital assets on public domain and creative commons was given by Mr. Gabriel Madriaga.

Not only does the use of images help with visual eye candy to help capture the reader’s attention with proper sequencing and formatting, it is also essential because of the added depth and perception to tell a good story at first glance. However, the process of using images and digital assets (either owned or pulled from primary sources from the internet) should require proper use; practicing responsible use of using and re-using intellectual properties for educational use and knowledge building.

Ending the session, Ms. Leny Estacio, the Director of the Center for Counseling and Student Development gave remarks and a footnote for responsible and ethical practices. The four-part seminar’s goal is to further strengthen the standard of delivering articles and publications. Assisting personnel to reach the prevalent standard and achieve responsible and sustainable practices in providing leading quality education and service.

Through the successful delivery of topics and insights brought by the event, the activity showcased the dedication of the University of Baguio’s ode to high-quality education that’s sustainable and accessible to its faculty, staff, stakeholders, and the community involved.
