Love and Light: Balancing health and wellness in the workplace

The University of Baguio (UB), spearheaded by the Human Resource Management Center (HRMC), conducted a seminar last Valentine’s Day for the non-teaching staff aimed at promoting best practices in maintaining a healthy work-life balance and promoting wellness in the workplace. The seminar was split up into two sessions and featured two speakers who tackled both mental and spiritual wellness as well as physical wellness, making for a well-rounded and engaging discussion.

The first speaker, Dr. Susie Bangles-Baldo (PhD) from Layad ya Ikigai Life Coaching Services, delved into ways to maintain good mental and spiritual wellness despite the challenges that may come with the workplace. She went into detail about little ways to maintain a healthy relationship with work and how to avoid burnout. She detailed the importance of engaging with activities that can help maintain a stable mood, such as spending time with friends and family and going out into nature.

Near the end of her segment, she grouped the participants by table and had them build towers out of given materials like paper plates and sheets of manila paper. This activity fostered an important sense of collaboration between the participants, and gave them something fun to accomplish at the end of a refreshing session.

The second speaker, Ms. Kimwell Anague (PTRP, RPT) from the School of Natural Sciences, discussed the other side of the coin and went into detail about how to maintain one’s physical health in the workplace. The highlight of her session was teaching the participants different exercises that they could do in the office to maintain flexibility and mobility. These were small activities that could be done while sitting down, optimized to be as doable as possible especially for the many office workers that were present during the event.

The activity was an overall success, with the participants eagerly engaging with the activities and listening to the different speakers share their expertise. Through this seminar, the University of Baguio reaffirms its commitment to fostering a healthy and supportive work environment for its staff. By addressing both mental and physical wellness, the event provided valuable insights and practical strategies that the participants can apply in their daily routines.
