University of Baguio Students Excel in Strawberry Festival Rapid Chess Tournament

The University of Baguio students, coached by Sir Ronaldo B. Alvez, recently participated in the 3rd Strawberry Festival Rapid Chess Tournament held at the BSU gymnasium La Trinidad. Out of 135 participating players in the open division category, the UB students managed to secure spots among the top 10 finishers after 7 rounds Swiss system and computerized pairing. The tournament, organized by LGU La Trinidad, is the first competition open to non-residents of La Trinidad.

The University of Baguio Students, coached by Sir Ronaldo B. Alvez, placed among the top 10 finishers out of 135 participating players in the open division category after 7 rounds Swiss system and computerized  pairing in playing with various chess geniuses from Baguio, Benguet and nearby provinces  in celebration for the activity of Strawberry Festival on April 1 held at the BSU gymnasium La Trinidad.  

According to the Tournament Director, Carlos Mama-o Jr. the 3rd STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL RAPID CHESS TOURNAMENT organized by LGU La Trinidad is the first competition open to non-residents of La Trinidad.

The University of Baguio students who placed in top 10 finishers  were:

  • BSCE, First Year, Daryl Penaflorida (3rd place, Open Category)
  • BSCE, Third Year, Daryll Guaque (5th Place , Open Category)
  • UBHS, Grade 9, Xyrus Gil Arinos, (7th place,
  • UBHS, Grade 11, Donnabell Mendoza Senior High Student (8th Place).
