The University of Baguio High School recently concluded a highly successful Basic Life Support (BLS) and Standard First Aid Training program. This four-day event, held from July 01 to 04, 2024, at the University of Baguio Legacy Building, was organized in response to City Resolution No. 143, Series of 2024, mandating the integration of age-appropriate basic life support training into the health and physical education curriculum for junior and senior high school students.

The training was spearheaded by the CORDRR1 teachers and conducted by the Baguio City Emergency Medical Services department, with Mr. Mark Stephen M. Mateo serving as the primary speaker. The program dedicated one day to Basic Life Support and three days to Standard First Aid, specifically targeting the UBHS faculty members. This initiative not only aligns with the city’s educational requirements but also enhances the school’s emergency readiness, thereby fostering a safer academic environment.

In alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 4 (Quality Education), the University of Baguio High School’s recent training initiative underscores the institution’s commitment to enhancing emergency preparedness, empowering educators and students, and ensuring adherence to local statutes. By providing essential life-saving skills, the school aims to create a safer educational setting and prepare its community for real-world emergencies.

The BLS component of the training, conducted on the first day, covered essential skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and choking relief for individuals of all ages. The subsequent three days focused on Standard First Aid, covering wound care, fracture management, burn treatment, and handling various medical emergencies such as allergic reactions, seizures, and heat-related illnesses. This comprehensive training allowed participants to gain in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in managing a wide range of emergencies.

By equipping teachers and student marshals with vital life-saving skills, the institution has established a competent network of initial responders. This proactive approach serves as a commendable model for other educational institutions, showcasing the potential of schools to foster resilient communities. The program’s success underscores the school’s dedication to student welfare and community health, effectively bridging the gap between theoretical academic instruction and practical life skills.
