On July 20, 2024, students from various universities, and interested attendees gathered for an afternoon discussion on Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the Google I/O Extended 2024 Conference, featuring expert speakers in the field. The discussion, held at the Legacy Building Multipurpose Hall of the University of Baguio, was organized by the Google Developers Group Baguio in collaboration with the School of Information Technology (SIT) to promote knowledge sharing, innovation and community engagement.
The event began with introductions of the sponsors: the University of Baguio, the Technological Consortium for Awareness, Readiness, and Advancement of Knowledge in Innovation (TARAKI-CAR), and the University of the Cordilleras Innovation and Technology Transfer Office (UC InTTO). Dr. Ellen Halover, the Dean of SIT, delivered a brief opening remark, expressing gratitude to the attendees and proudly emphasizing that the GDG Baguio Managers, from the inception of the group to the current manager, are all SIT alumni. This achievement, she noted, reflects the University of Baguio’s Core Values of Competence, Integrity, and Service. The keynote speaker, Vanessa May Orpilla of Texas Instruments (T.I.), delivered a short heart welcoming speech, and announced that attendees would receive “swags” or merchandise at the end of the event, which excited everyone.
The host, Ms. Jezelle Oliva, energized the audience with a short icebreaker, ensuring everyone was engaged before introducing the first speaker, Mrs. Zelle Cuevas-Canuel from Digital Nomad. Her presentation, “AI-Powered Future: Solving Problems Through Disruptive Innovation,” covered AI’s impact on society and included her favorite books related to the topic. At the end of her discussion, she posed a thought-provoking question: “Is AI a disruptive force or a platform of disruption?” One of the UB students responded, sharing his thoughts. Additionally, Mrs. Cuevas-Canuel answered questions from two students, one from the SIT department. Unfortunately, the final question was interrupted by an unforeseen power outage, but she still managed to provide an appreciated answer.
While waiting for the power to return, Ms. Oliva entertained the audience by having them turn on their phone flashlights and swing them like at a mini concert while chanting a GDG phrase. It was a memorable sight and highlighted Ms. Oliva’s skills as an excellent host.
The next speaker, Google Developer Expert Mr. Ralph Regalado, presented on “Getting Started with Gemini using Python,” demonstrating the topic throughout his talk. He highlighted how Machine Learning can be utilized to create AI for improved optimization and more accurate results. His engaging presentation sparked interest among the audience, leading to several students asking questions and showing their active participation.
Finally, Mr. Tzar Umang, COO of Makerspace Innovhub OPC, delivered a presentation on “Gemini as Your Study Companion with RAG,” demonstrating how increased use of Gemini helps expand its database, potentially leading to more accurate or sometimes erroneous results. Additionally, Mr. Anton Raphael Orpilla from Trellix made a special appearance, sharing his insights on the negative uses of AI and providing a link to a book about Artificial Intelligence.
Ms. Oliva also took the opportunity to introduce TARAKI-CAR, highlighting their objectives and showcasing their achievements, which proved to be quite motivating for the audience. The conference continued with an engaging panel discussion, where attendees were encouraged to ask questions, and the speakers provided thoughtful answers. The event wrapped up with a distribution of merchandise from the organizers, and special swags from the speakers were given to those who actively participated by asking questions and sharing their insights. The considerate gestures and engaging interactions ensured that all participants left with a sense of accomplishment and appreciation.
The event wrapped up with memorable group photos, capturing the day’s highlights. Despite starting later than planned, the conference was a success, and attendees left feeling satisfied with the valuable insights they gained. Additionally, A-Cube Studios made a notable appearance, showcasing their impressive 3D-printed products, which captivated and amazed the audience. Their innovative display added an extra layer of excitement and interest to the event.
