The University of Baguio once again commemorated a significant milestone in the academic journey of its students, having held the 25th annual Capping, Pinning, and Candle Lighting Ceremony of the School of Nursing (SN).
More than just a tradition, the ceremony symbolizes the hard work and dedication that the nursing students put into learning their craft. It is their official foray into the world of nursing, marking their mastery of their fundamental studies and the transition into clinical practice that will help build them into full-fledged and competent nurses of the future.
The modern ceremony of capping and pinning can be traced all the way back to 1855, when Queen Victoria of England bestowed the Red Cross of St. George to Florence Nightingale for her exceptional service in aiding the injured during the Crimean War. This achievement was then passed on to her brightest students in the form of a medal of excellence.
The ceremonial candle-lighting is also in commemoration of Florence Nightingale and her contributions to the profession of nursing. Dubbed “The Lady with the Lamp”, her tireless pursuit of aiding the sick and injured even deep into the night has forever changed the landscape of nursing, imbuing the profession with heart and soul that has trickled down into modern-day students who seek to pursue the same career.
The ceremony began with the warm welcome remarks of Dr. Janice Kaylyn Lonogan, the university’s Vice President for Academic Affairs. Several guest speakers were also present, delivering messages of heartfelt encouragement and urging the students to continue on their academic journey to become registered nurses.The speakers included Ms. Angela Betsaida Laguipo (RN), Mr. Russell Peralta (RN, MAN), and Ms. Anna Chris Kilakil (MD).
School of Nursing Dean Ms. Helen Alalag (RN, MAN) led the presentation of Capping Symbols, leading into the main part of the program.
The ceremony reflects the university’s unwavering commitment to nurturing empowered professionals who can address the ever-changing needs of society. It serves as a profound acknowledgment of the hard work, perseverance, and personal growth of every nursing student, demonstrating their passion to make a meaningful difference in society.
