The School of Nursing (SN) has officially sealed a partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in the pursuit of providing quality education and training to the nursing students of the University of Baguio.
Partially funded by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), the GIZ Project “Training Partnership in Nursing Care” (Global-Skills Partnership) aims to build up the nursing qualifications of students in the Philippines to meet German requirements. Through an academic exchange program for students and lecturers, the partnership seeks to provide technical training and additional educational materials that will open up more opportunities for the students.
The signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has stipulated that the Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) GmbH will implement the program in Germany, while the University of Baguio will implement the program in the Philippines.
According to the MOA, students under the partnership program should acquire the regular Philippine degree “Bachelor of Science in Nursing” and a Philippine license as a “Registered Nurse”. If involved in the abroad track, the students must have sufficient qualifications to be recognized as nurses in Germany, including being knowledgeable in the German language, and must be prepared to live and work in the country as part of the program’s intercultural training. The program aims to involve around thirty (30) students and at least one or two lecturers in the academic exchange.
Both schools also seek to develop and implement an enhanced curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program, integrating German teaching methods and lessons, specifically German language and comprehensive nursing care for Geriatric patients, within the existing academic content in the Philippines. The incorporation of foreign competencies training within the educational program aims to increase the knowledge and transfer of the students, allowing them to hone their techniques and skills on an international level. The Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) will also be upgrading the existing skills laboratory, contributing the necessary materials to ensure that the practical training ground of the students is up-to-date and fully equipped to facilitate continued learning.
Although the program aims to send students abroad to train, the agreement stipulates that it isn’t geared toward prepping students for foreign employment. Rather, the program is geared towards nurturing globally competitive professionals by exposing students to foreign education and working environments.
As the university moves forward with the partnership, it hopes to continue providing new opportunities for growth and development to its students to ensure that they can become exceptional professionals within their field of study.
