The University of Baguio (UB) demonstrated its ongoing dedication to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by organizing its third annual UB BIKERS event on April 27, 2024, in partnership with the University of Baguio Alumni Foundation Inc. (UBAFI), headed by their President, Engr. Eleazer Demayo. The organization sponsored the prizes for the Biker completers, including the raffle prizes for the Zumba participants. This collaboration underscored UB’s commitment to engaging its alumni network in supporting community initiatives and promoting sustainable development.

Spearheaded by the Research, Innovation, Extension and Community Outreach (RIECO), the event served as a testament to UB’s dedication and commitment to supporting its partner communities. The event highlighted UB’s proactive approach towards addressing societal challenges and promoting sustainable development at the local level with a revitalized focus on achieving the objectives of the SDGs. Specifically, the event aimed to benefit the Visually Impaired Positive and Productive Dreamer, Barangay Lucnab, Lindawan Elementary School and Lindawan National High School. The UB BIKERS event encompassed not only the biking activity but also a series of activities that include Zumba wellness dance, aligning with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 4: Quality Education which promotes holistic well-being and community engagement.

The 20 km biking route, traversing through Camp 7 and the Loakan Bypass Road before returning to the university, symbolized UB’s commitment to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. By engaging participants in physical activity while exploring their surroundings, the event fostered a deeper connection to the community and promoted sustainable modes of transportation. The event also featured Zumba wellness dance, a vibrant and energetic form of exercise which provided the participants an avenue to experience a fun and effective way to improve cardiovascular fitness, coordination, and flexibility.

The event drew participation from a diverse group of 130 individuals, including UB affiliates, students from neighboring schools, and community members. Prominent attendees such as City Mayor Hon. Benjamin Magalong and representatives from the Philippine National Police Baguio (PNP Baguio) and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) underscored the collaborative spirit of UB’s initiatives, reflecting SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Ultimately, the UB BIKERS event exceeded its role as a mere physical activity. It served as a platform for fostering community resilience, promoting knowledge-based economies, and advancing the principles of sustainable development outlined in the SDGs. Through these activities, UB reaffirmed its commitment to holistic community development and the realization of a more sustainable and equitable future.
