The University of Baguio through its representative, Dr. Julius Simon, a distinguished faculty member from the School of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts, recently participated in the COE & COD Annual Convention 2024 “Aguhon.” This convention, themed “Reflecting on the Past, Shaping the Present, Advancing Towards Excellence in Teacher Education,” brought together educators and stakeholders from across the Philippines. The event was held from May 28-31, 2024, at Hotel Fortuna in Cebu City.

Organized by the Teacher Education Council, an agency attached to the Department of Education, in collaboration with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Technical Skills Development Authority (TESDA), National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA), and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), the convention aimed to discuss crucial issues facing the education sector in the country.

The focus of the convention centered on dissecting the provisions and transformative potential of the Excellence in Teacher Education Act (RA 11713). This legislation has significant implications for reshaping the educational landscape in the Philippines. These discussions highlighted the crucial role of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in supporting the Department of Education’s “Matatag” agenda, which aims to enhance the basic education curriculum nationwide.

Among the key highlights of the event were breakout sessions covering various topics relevant to the current state of teacher education in the Philippines. Distinguished dignitaries, such as Congressman Mark Go, Chairperson of the House Committee on Higher and Technical Education, and Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, shared their visions and initiatives aimed at realizing quality education for all.

The convention also witnessed the active participation of educators from HEIs across the country, all of whom have been conferred with Center of Excellence and Center of Development status. This participation showcased a collaborative effort towards advancing educational standards and shaping the future of generations to come.

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) play a pivotal role in preparing pre-service teachers for the noble task of shaping young minds and instilling essential values in the next generation, who represent the hope of our nation. Through rigorous training, innovative teaching methodologies, and a deep commitment to academic excellence, HEIs contribute significantly to producing competent and compassionate educators. These educators are equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of education, ensuring that every child receives quality education and paving the way for a brighter and more promising tomorrow.
