COESAC: A Legacy of Student Leadership and Volunteerism

The establishment of the University of Baguio Commission on Elections (UB COMELEC) aims to ensure the exercise of social and political rights among enrolled students. Two years ago, a resolution was passed to rename the organization as the University of Baguio Commission on Elections Student Administrative Committee (UB COESAC), signifying its official recognition as a committee under the Office of Student Affairs. COESAC has recently become a vital support system, assisting students and the university community.

The primary role of UB COESAC is to facilitate various elections within the University, ensuring the efficient and democratic conduct of student elections. It serves as the recipient of appeals and complaints regarding elected officers and a watchdog to enforce electoral rules and regulations. UB COESAC strives to promote student engagement and participation in the University’s political and social affairs through its initiatives. However, this has been elevated from a mere Commission on Elections to a Student Administrative Committee, signifying its expanded role as a support system for various programs and initiatives within the University. The COESAC now assumes a broader responsibility to ensure the success and advancement of the institution as a whole.

During the start of the new academic year on August 14, 2023, COESAC assumed the role of the Information Desk for transferees and first-year students, offering guidance and support to aid their transition into university life. COESAC members, equipped with extensive knowledge and a welcoming demeanor, served as valuable resources, addressing inquiries and assisting students in navigating the university procedures and locations.

COESAC’s commitment to excellence extends beyond the confines of the campus. The organization has played a pivotal role in organizing and facilitating various events, leaving a lasting impact on the University of Baguio community. Notably, the 15th Leadership Summit at Beckel La Trinidad Benguet exemplified COESAC’s dedication to fostering student leadership skills. This summit provided a platform for aspiring leaders from diverse backgrounds to learn, exchange experiences, and inspire one another. Additionally, COESAC facilitates the U.B. Freshmen Week from October 2-6, providing incoming students with engaging activities and workshops to foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie from the outset of their academic journey. Moreover, COESAC has also actively participated in outreach programs, exemplified by their involvement in U.B. Gifts on November 18, 2023. COESAC has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to serving the community and positively impacting the University of Baguio through these initiatives.

To give way for a much strengthened and smoother election transition for A.Y. 2024-2025, the central committee relinquished the current list of commissioners and re-opened the application for the commissioners and electoral boards last February 22, 2024. On March 1, 2024, crucial responsibility was transferred within the University of Baguio, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s governance. The chairperson’s responsibility was bestowed upon Hon. Gabrielle Cabredo, a student from the School of Criminal Justice and Public Safety. This transfer of key responsibility was previously held by Hon. Marc Gerard C. Mabunga, who was also from the same school. Hon. Gabrielle Cabredo was elected by the newly accepted commissioners from the nine universities of the University of Baguio. Furthermore, the position of co-chairperson was passed on from Hon. Marie Rose G. Subdi to Hon. Christine Joy De Guzman, a commissioner from the School of Business Administration and Accountancy. These changes reflect a shift in leadership and a renewed commitment to effective administration within the University of Baguio Commission on Elections Student Administrative Committee.

As the University of Baguio prepares for the A.Y. 2024-2025 elections, these changes within the central committee and COESAC signify a commitment to ensuring a fair and efficient electoral process. The newly elected commissioners and the transfer of critical responsibilities demonstrate the University’s dedication to student leadership and the democratic principles that underpin their educational institution.

COESAC’s transformation into the University of Baguio Commission on Elections Student Administrative Committee has marked a significant milestone in the organization’s journey. Through their role as the Information Desk, facilitators of events, and active participants in programs, COESAC has proven that student leaders exist to uplift others through volunteerism. Their legacy will continue to inspire future generations of students, reminding them of the transformative power of selfless service and leadership.
