Atty. Emocling’s journey to becoming a lawyer was not an easy one. He lost his sight at the age of 10 due to a medical condition, but he did not let that stop him from pursuing his dreams. His disability never held him back in his studies, he graduated cum laude as a political science student. He then studied at the University of Baguio and earned his Bachelor of Laws degree.

The new attorney recalls, during an interview with the Philippine Information Agency Cordillera, how difficult law school was due to the lack of materials for blind law students, He also had to face the many stereotypes against blind people and people with disabilities.

He didn’t allow these factors to deter him though, and his blind determination to achieve his dreams led him to where he is today, of course, with some help from those around him. Atty. Emocling credits his friends and former mentors in his achievement with his main driving force being his family.

Atty. Emocling’s former professor, Atty. Pablito V. Sanidad Sr. took to social media to congratulate his former student where he stated:

“Congratulations Anthony Mark Dulawan Emocling! My blind student at the University of Baguio, School of Law (UBSOL) who against all the odds and despite being blind is now a Lawyer!”

Atty. Pablito V. Sanidad Sr, who currently serves as the mayor of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, was also the former dean for the University of Baguio’s School of Law.

His loss of sight did not deter the attorney-to-be from pursuing his goals, the University of Baguio, through the dedication of its School of Law, ensured that Emocling was able to learn amongst his peers. The university provided him with the necessary support and accommodations to help him in his studies. This inclusiveness allowed Emocling to fully participate in class discussions and activities, just like any other student.

Emocling’s achievement is a testament to the power of inclusiveness, which is the principle of ensuring that everyone is given equal opportunities regardless of their abilities or disabilities. It is a crucial aspect of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations, which aim to create a world that is fair, just, and equitable for all.

In many countries, people with disabilities face significant challenges in accessing education and employment opportunities. But Emocling’s story shows that with the right support and accommodations, people with disabilities can achieve great things.

Emocling’s remarkable achievement is a milestone not only for him but also for the community of people with disabilities in the Philippines. It is a testament to the power of determination, hard work, and the importance of inclusiveness in creating a better world for all.
