Training at Clark International Airport

Editor's Note: The University of Baguio deploys its Hotel & Restaurant Management and Tourism students in establishments in the country and abroad for its local and international on-the-job training program. In the following article, UB intern Rick Jason Aquino shares his experience training at Clark International Airport from February 13 to April 26, 2018.   

 

 

 

Most tourism students prefer to have their on-the-job training in airline offices, tourism offices, theme parks and museums. I am a tourism student myself and I have chosen to take my OJT at Clark International Airport.

 

At first, I really did not have any idea what tasks I would be doing at the airport until I began to start my duty. 

 

My first duty was under Cathay Dragon and my task was to assist arrival wheelchair passengers. I was clueless of the things I was supposed to do even though I was told to take the passenger to the immigration area then to the baggage claim area or conveyor and exit the airport. At that point, I did not know what a conveyer was or what an immigration area looked like. My very first task that day turned out to be my very first challenge. It was a good thing a co-trainee helped me out and guided me until I assisted the wheelchair passenger outside the airport with his bags.

 

My second task was to do airport announcements for Air Asia. One of my supervisors happened to have heard me during my first airport announcement and asked me to do more announcements for Air Asia. I was filled with joy and excitement. After announcing for Air Asia the second time, another supervisor heard me and told me to go and announce for Scoot (Tiger Airways) after the flight. My supervisor was impressed. I was the official announcer for Scoot and Air Asia for the whole duration of my on-the-job training.

 

After a few weeks I started doing boarding announcements for Qatar Airways.  Likewise, with Asiana Airlines, I got to speak in Korean language for the boarding announcement. It was hard at first but it turned out okay as the days went by.

 

Announcing for four airlines made everyone – the employees, security officers, even the supervisors – call me “announcer” and not by my first name.

 

There were a lot of challenges I had to face that made me uncomfortable and gave me a lot of pressure yet I am glad that I have improved a lot and became better because of those challenges. As Joshua J. Marine said, challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.
