Dr. Paciencia Calpito, a faculty member of the University of Baguio (UB) School of Natural Sciences (SNS), has been presented the 2015 Betty S. Orap Research Award by the Philippine Association of Medical Technologists (PAMET) Baguio-CAR Chapter.

Calpito was recognized for her “genuine sincerity in the pursuit of accentuating the focal role of research, increasing the knowledge within a discipline of practical application and theory development.”

She was distinguished for her “aptitude in working as a research collaborator which further nurtured her capabilities to perform” as an educator and for “showing exemplary skills and unfailing commitment to her job.”

Further, she was given the award for her “invaluable contribution in the advancement of the medical technology profession by inspiring medical technologists to embrace research towards an evidence-based practice.”

Calpito, who also serves as the program chair for the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science program of the University, worked on various research projects focusing on community and public health, framing her works along the field of medical technology. Her most recent work, “Building Communities As We Educate Our Future Medical Technologists,” focuses on triangulating evidences leading to the common parasitic diseases and asymptomatic urinary tract infection among children.

She has also written a handbook in community and public health, the first of its kind in the country. An offshoot of her dissertation, it prompted her to go around the country, travelling Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Calpito was handed the award during the annual scientific conference of PAMET Baguio-CAR at Hotel Supreme last Oct. 25. During the ceremony, UB was also presented a certificate of recognition for its “invaluable and selfless contributions to PAMET Baguio-CAR’s cause and ideals by meritoriously supporting its activities, plans and programs.”

PAMET is the national organization of all registered medical technologists in the country. It has affiliations with the International Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists and the ASEAN Association of Medical Laboratory Technologists.
