This school year, the University of Baguio (UB) welcomed three new additions to its management – a prominent prosecutor, a holder of two doctorates, and a former video editor for ABS-CBN.

Top prosecutor

Atty. Pablito V. Sanidad Sr. – who was a member of the panel for the impeachment case against former president Joseph Estrada – now sits as the new dean of the UB School of Law.

Atty. Sanidad

Atty. Sanidad was part of the prosecution team for some of the country's most high-profile cases, the most notable being Estrada's controversial plunder case. He was a member of the team of private legal practitioners that helped the prosecution in the plunder case against the former president, resulting in his conviction.

A former member of the board of the Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers of the International Commission of Jurists based in Geneva, Switzerland, he has been a representative of the country to global conferences and dialogues, as well as in international organizations. He served as chairman of the Regional Council for Human Rights in Asia after he was elected in Singapore in 1988. He was also the chairman of the Philippine Government Panel on the U.S.–R.P. Joint Labor Committee on the U.S. Bases.

Likewise, being the deputy minister of the Department of Labor and Employment during the administration of former president Corazon Aquino, he was the country's delegate to the International Labor Organization Convention in Geneva, Switzerland in 1986.

Moreover, the University of the Philippines alumnus has built his reputation as a staunch advocate of human rights. He was a board member of the Task Force Detainees of the Philippines which campaigns against human rights violations and abuses and served as chairman of The Free Legal Assistance Group, a nationwide human rights lawyers' organization committed to protecting and promoting human rights and civil liberties.

For his work both in law and in public service, Atty. Sanidad has received a string of recognitions here and abroad. Just last year, he has been honored with the Pillar of the Legal Profession Award by the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.

In 2010, he received the Roman Ozaeta award from the Philippine Bar Association. He was also awarded the Gawad Tanggol Karapatan in 2008 by the Cordillera Human Rights Alliance for his work in championing human rights.

In addition, the Narvacan, Ilocos Sur-born lawyer has been adopted as a citizen of the Sta. Clara County in California, U.S.A.

Double doctor

Meanwhile, a holder of two doctorates, Dr. Demetrio G. Daet is the new dean of the UB School of Dentistry.

After completing his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 1986, he pursued Doctor of Philosophy at the Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry in Japan, finishing in 1996.

In 2008, he served as president of the Baguio Chapter of the Philippine Dental Association. He also sat as vice-president of the Philippine Association of Japanese Ministry of Education Scholars – Northern Luzon Chapter from 2002 to 2005.

He has also headed several dental missions around the region, including Ifugao and Nueva Vizcaya.

Currently, he is a consultant at the Notre Dame de Chartres Hospital.

Among his notable achievements include being hailed as an exemplary teacher, receiving the Fernando G. Bautista Exemplary Teacher Award in 2005 and the Outstanding PERAA Member (Teaching Category) award in 1999.

In addition, he was commended with the Bienvenido A. Yandoc Leadership Award by the Philippine Dental Association – Baguio City Chapter last year, as well as with the Plaque of Appreciation by Notre Dame de Chartres Hospital.

On the other hand, the UB Media Affairs and Publications office is now led by Donald P. Rentiquiano, who previously worked for ABS-CBN TV3 Baguio. A former video editor for the giant TV network, Rentiquiano had his stint specifically in the news department, video-editing news segments and capturing footages for TV Patrol Northern Luzon. He has a degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering.
